Nobel Peace Prize Hypocrisy | Why Julian Assange Not Awarded Prize But Russian & Philippines Journalists Are For Exposing Freedom Abuses in Their Countries?

The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to journalists Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia.

But this post is not about that. It is to ask if the Norwegian Nobel Committee and its chairperson Berit Reiss-Andersen are sincere, or if they are part of our broken global world order?

“Free, independent and fact-based journalism serves to protect against abuse of power, lies and war propaganda,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, as she explained why the prize went to two journalists.

Her comments were republished by local, reginal and global news and media outlets like parrots – while non (that I saw) asked similar critical questions.

If supposedly;

The work of journalists Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia are deserving to be awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for their fight for freedom of expression in their countries;
That they faced persistent attacks, harassment and even murder;
That the words of Berit Reiss-Andersen “Free, independent and fact-based journalism serves to protect against abuse of power, lies and war propaganda,” are 100% sincere;

Why hasn’t the Nobel committee awarded a Prize to Julian Assange for the same, perhaps even bigger reasons.

Didn’t Julian expose not only corruption in the United States but across the globe? Didn’t he expose the video of journalists being killed in Iraq by the US military? How about him exposing the cover up of that video by the US Administration and its military? Was his work not in line with freedom of expression and advancing democracy? Did he not face threats of harassment and murder?

The answers are very clear and exact.

Not awarding Assange the “Prize” can be for one of three reasons below:

A- The Nobel committee has been living under a rock the last decade.

B- The values they claim to apply are paper thin PR slogans.

C- This would be a line they cannot cross, especially if they wanted to remain the darlings of the overseers of today’s broken global order.
